Kamloops addiction treatment workers vote to join United Steelworkers

KAMLOOPS, British Columbia, Oct. 08, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Workers at A New Tomorrow Treatment Solutions Ltd., an addiction treatment centre in Kamloops, B.C., have joined the United Steelworkers union (USW).

A New Tomorrow provides treatment and recovery programs for youth and adults living with addiction. Social workers, counsellors, nurses, addiction workers, cooks and cleaners work together to provide the care, programming and support people need to stabilize and recover.

“We are proud to welcome the workers at A New Tomorrow Treatment Solutions to the Steelworkers family,” said Scott Lunny, USW Director for Western Canada. “These workers dedicate themselves to caring for others, often under challenging and stressful conditions. They deserve the same care and support in their own workplace.”

These workers are seeking greater consistency and stability, improved staffing and workplace supports, and better wages and benefits. Heavy workloads and workplace stress have taken a significant toll on employees who are committed to providing quality care for people in recovery.

“Taking care of others shouldn’t mean sacrificing your own health and well-being. By joining the United Steelworkers, these workers are taking a strong step toward building a healthier, more supportive workplace where they have a real voice in the decisions that affect them,” said Lunny.

With certification secured, the union will work with members to identify their bargaining priorities and prepare to negotiate a first collective agreement that reflects the important work they do.

These workers are now members of USW Local 1-417.

USW has significant representation in health care and support services and recently welcomed workers at Wiidookodaadiwin Services in Kamloops.

About the United Steelworkers union

The USW represents 225,000 members in nearly every economic sector across Canada and is the largest private-sector union in North America, with 850,000 members in Canada, the United States and the Caribbean.

Each year, thousands of workers choose to join the USW because of its strong track record in creating safer, more respectful workplaces and negotiating better wages, benefits and pensions.
