Greek Activists Return to Athens After Detention by Israel
(MENAFN) Greek campaigners who were unlawfully held by Israel after joining the Global Sumud Flotilla headed toward Gaza returned to Athens on Friday, describing alleged mistreatment and torture they say they endured during their detention period.
The group of 19 activists arrived at Athens International Airport at about 9 pm local time (1800 GMT). They were met by family members, friends, and pro-Palestinian supporters who gathered to welcome them back.
Supporters waving Palestinian flags chanted slogans in solidarity with Gaza and voiced opposition to cooperation with Israel.
Among those returning was Phaedra Vokali, who stated at the airport that several activists sustained injuries as a result of what she described as Israeli mistreatment.
"There were also those among us who were in such terrible condition that they could not walk. After all this torture, they took us to prisons at the Port of Ashdod," she said.
Vokali further explained that the "inhumane conditions" persisted after their transfer as well.
She added that the group was held under extremely severe conditions, with no access to drinking water, no food, and no toilet paper.
"We were lying almost on top of each other in containers. Compared to what Palestinians have endured for decades, what we experienced is nothing," added Vokali.
