Israeli Military Reports Death of Master Sergeant Near Lebanon Border

(MENAFN) The Israeli military has confirmed that a master sergeant was killed during operations close to the border area with Lebanon, according to reports.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday when a drone strike hit an area in northern Israel near the frontier, resulting in the death of Master Sgt. Alexander Glovanyov, aged 47. Military sources stated that the attack came after drones carrying explosives were launched toward the border region, with responsibility attributed to Hezbollah, as cited by multiple Israeli media outlets.

The Israeli army said the soldier lost his life during combat activity linked to escalating cross-border hostilities.

Despite a ceasefire agreement that has been in place since April 17 and later extended into mid-May, the situation along the border has continued to see frequent exchanges of fire. Israeli forces have carried out repeated strikes in Lebanese territory, while clashes with Hezbollah have persisted.

Since early March, shortly after the wider regional conflict escalated, ongoing Israeli operations in Lebanon have resulted in significant casualties and displacement. Reports indicate thousands of deaths, several thousand injuries, and more than a million people forced to leave their homes amid continuing military activity. Israeli forces have also maintained a designated buffer zone within Lebanese territory, adding to tensions between the two sides.

In parallel diplomatic developments, the United States is preparing to host discussions between the involved parties in Washington, D.C., scheduled for May 14–15, in an effort aimed at reducing hostilities and stabilizing the situation along the border.
