US Justice Department Faces Internal Disruption Over Comey Prosecution Efforts

(MENAFN) The US Department of Justice is reportedly experiencing internal upheaval as several prosecutors have been reassigned or left their positions amid controversy surrounding efforts to pursue legal action against former FBI Director James Comey, according to reports on Saturday.

Some attorneys working in the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, located near Washington, have either resigned or sought transfers. The reported reason is concern that they could be pressured into handling politically sensitive cases that conflict with their professional or ethical judgment. The disruption has also reportedly affected ongoing major prosecutions within the office.

The situation has emerged alongside what critics describe as a significant use of government resources in relation to two indictments involving Comey. The former FBI director, who served under both former President Barack Obama and former President Donald Trump before being dismissed in May 2017, is seen by Trump as a political adversary.

Legal observers cited in reports have questioned the strength of the cases, suggesting they lack substantial legal basis and are driven largely by personal hostility from Trump toward Comey.

The first indictment, which accused Comey of allegedly misleading Congress in 2018 regarding his role in media leaks, was dismissed after a judge ruled that the prosecutor involved had been improperly appointed.

A second indictment issued recently by a grand jury alleges that Comey made threatening gestures toward the president involving seashell arrangements on social media about 10 months ago. However, legal experts have reportedly argued that the allegations stretch the definition of what constitutes a true threat.

Since returning to office for a second term, Trump has faced criticism from political opponents who claim his administration is using the Justice Department to target perceived adversaries, while neglecting other criminal investigations.
