Peter Magyar Takes Power in Hungary After Major Election Shift

(MENAFN) Peter Magyar officially became Hungary’s new prime minister on Saturday, bringing an end to Viktor Orban’s 16 years in office.

The swearing-in ceremony took place in parliament after Magyar’s center-right Tisza Party achieved a sweeping victory in last month’s national elections, defeating the long-ruling nationalist Fidesz alliance.

By winning a two-thirds majority in the 199-member legislature, Tisza gained the authority needed to overturn several major policies implemented during Orban’s administration.

Magyar arrived at parliament accompanied by members of his party, which now holds 141 parliamentary seats. Meanwhile, the Fidesz-KDNP coalition suffered a dramatic decline, securing only 52 seats. The far-right Our Homeland Movement obtained six mandates.

According to reports, President Tamas Sulyok formally invited Magyar to establish a new administration after the Tisza Party achieved a historic electoral success in April.

Sulyok said Hungarian voters had “declared their will” and entrusted Tisza with the responsibility of governing the country.

Before lawmakers officially took their oaths, all 199 members of parliament along with 11 minority representatives submitted their credentials during the opening session.

Magyar stated that the incoming administration would focus heavily on anti-corruption measures and efforts to recover European Union funding that had been frozen because of concerns related to corruption and rule-of-law issues.

“The most important task will be stopping corruption and bringing home EU funds,” he said before the session.

The new leadership is also anticipated to pursue improved relations with the European Union following years of strained ties during Orban’s tenure.

During the same parliamentary session, lawmakers selected a new speaker of parliament, appointing Tisza-backed candidate Agnes Forsthoffer to the position.
