Xi, Trump to Hold Talks on “World Peace” Amid US–Iran Conflict

(MENAFN) China has announced that Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump are expected to hold in-depth discussions covering major issues related to bilateral relations as well as broader questions of global peace and development, at a time of heightened tensions linked to the conflict involving the United States and Iran.

According to Beijing, the talks will focus on a wide range of strategic topics as Trump prepares for an upcoming state visit to China scheduled for May 13–15, marking his first trip to the country in nearly nine years.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said that high-level engagement between heads of state plays a crucial role in shaping the direction of relations between the two powers, emphasizing that “Heads of state diplomacy plays an irreplaceable role in providing strategic guidance for China-US relations,”

The spokesperson also noted that China remains willing to strengthen cooperation with the United States while managing disagreements through what it described as principles of equality, mutual respect, and shared benefit. He added that both sides should work toward greater stability in an increasingly uncertain global environment, saying China "stands ready to work with the US to expand cooperation and manage differences in the spirit of equality, respect, and mutual benefit and provide more stability and certainty for transforming a volatile world."

The announcement comes against the backdrop of ongoing tensions tied to the conflict involving the United States and Iran, which escalated after a military campaign launched by Washington and its regional partner in early 2024. The fighting has resulted in thousands of casualties and widespread displacement, according to reported figures.

China has repeatedly criticized the use of military force in the region, describing the strikes carried out by the United States and its ally as unlawful and warning that such actions have contributed to instability in key maritime routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global energy supplies.

Beijing has maintained that dialogue and diplomacy are the only viable paths toward reducing tensions and preventing further deterioration of the regional situation, while continuing to call for restraint from all involved parties.
