Bomb Blast on Colombian Highway Leaves 14 Dead

(MENAFN) The death toll has climbed to 14 after a bomb explosion in southwestern Colombia, while 38 others were reported injured, according to authorities on Saturday.

The attack involved an explosive device placed inside a culvert along the Pan-American highway in Cajibio, located in the Cauca region. It was triggered as multiple vehicles were moving through the area. Officials noted that the detonation happened during peak traffic, which worsened both the level of destruction and the number of casualties.

Following the explosion, security forces were immediately sent to the scene. Witnesses reported that the incident took place amid heavy traffic congestion. Among the damaged vehicles was a traditional rural bus called a “chiva”, which was completely destroyed. The blast also impacted several nearby vehicles and left a large crater on the roadway. Reports further suggested that an explosive may have been thrown onto a bus before it went off, increasing the severity of the incident.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro attributed responsibility for the attack to Ivan Mordisco, the leader of the EMC faction of the FARC rebel group. “Those who killed 7 civilians and injured 20 civilians in Cajibio are terrorists, fascists and drug traffickers,” Petro wrote on social media, also ordering stronger military action and international efforts to track down the group.
