Danish FM criticizes US tariffs amid European Arctic security efforts
Speaking alongside Norwegian counterpart Espen Barth Eide at a joint briefing in Oslo, Rasmussen said the planned Arctic Endurance exercise was intended to demonstrate European commitment to Arctic security. He added that the US tariff announcement was “very paradoxical.”
“It is disruptive that we now have this message from the president, which comes on the back of a number of European countries having taken on the task that Trump believes we have neglected,” Rasmussen noted.
He emphasized that EU countries are coordinating their response, arguing that the tariffs could impact the entire bloc. Referring to discussions with US officials, he said, “It was a constructive conversation. And we will have to see whether we can continue it, so that the president gives up his dream of taking over Greenland.”
Rasmussen stressed the need to uphold core principles, adding, “The American president is unconventional, to put it mildly. But the United States is also more than the president.”
Eide echoed these concerns, highlighting that “fundamental principles are being called into question,” and stated firmly, “We will not allow ourselves to be pressured.”
