Elon Musk sues OpenAI, Microsoft over alleged wrongful gains
According to the filing, Musk alleges he was defrauded of the $38 million he contributed to OpenAI in 2015, arguing that he is entitled to a portion of the company’s current valuation, which is reportedly $500 billion. The document estimates that OpenAI earned between $65.5 billion and $109.4 billion from his early funding, while Microsoft, which has invested in the company since 2019 and owns 27% of OpenAI Group PBC, made between $13.3 billion and $25.1 billion.
“Without Elon Musk, there’d be no OpenAI. He provided the bulk of the seed funding, lent his reputation, and taught them all he knows about scaling a business,” stated Musk’s lead lawyer, Steven Molo, citing estimates from expert witness financial economist C. Paul Wazzan mentioned in the filing.
OpenAI dismissed Musk’s claims as “baseless” and described the lawsuit as part of a “harassment” campaign. Microsoft has not commented on the compensation issue.
Both defendants filed a separate motion on Friday asking the court to reject Wazzan’s analysis, labeling it as “made up” and “unverifiable,” according to reports.
