6.5 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Papua New Guinea

(MENAFN) A major seismic event measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale has rattled Papua New Guinea's mountainous interior, US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed Monday.

The tremor struck at 1031GMT near Goroka, the provincial capital serving Eastern Highlands Province, officials reported. Seismological data indicates the earthquake's epicenter sat 110 kilometers (68 miles) beneath the surface, according to USGS monitoring stations.

Initial assessments from the German Research Center for Geosciences placed the magnitude slightly higher at 6.6 before analysts revised their calculations downward to 6.4 following additional data review.

Authorities have not received immediate reports of casualties or structural damage from the affected region. No tsunami alert has been issued for surrounding coastal areas, officials confirmed. Emergency response teams remain on standby as assessments continue throughout the remote highland communities where communications infrastructure can be limited following seismic activity.
