Putin Sets Conditions for Macron Talks

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin is willing to engage in talks with French President Emmanuel Macron, but only if discussions are conducted respectfully and with a defined objective, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Macron stated on Friday that certain countries have already resumed contact with Moscow and argued that Europe and Ukraine need an appropriate structure to reopen dialogue “properly.” He said it could become “useful again” to speak directly with Putin, warning that without a coordinated framework the European Union risks “discussing among ourselves” while individual negotiators “go alone to talk with the Russians,” a situation he described as “not optimal.”

Speaking to media on Sunday, Peskov stressed that dialogue must not become a platform for one side “to read lectures” to the other, but should instead be aimed at “understanding each other’s positions.”

“Putin is always ready to explain his positions in detail, sincerely and consistently,” the Kremlin spokesman said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reinforced that position, noting that Putin has repeatedly underlined his openness to talks — but only with “polite people with some elementary skills of decency.”

Macron’s remarks came after an EU summit this week failed to reach consensus on using frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine due to internal disagreements. Instead, leaders backed a €90 billion ($105 billion) loan raised on capital markets to help cover Ukraine’s expanding budget shortfall. Although the decision was presented as a breakthrough, several EU member states declined to participate.

The most recent direct exchange between Putin and Macron took place in a phone call in July 2025 — their first since 2022 — and centered on the conflict in Ukraine.
