Ukraine to face weaker position when returning to peace talk

(MENAFN) Russia asserted Thursday that Ukraine will eventually be forced back to the negotiating table but from what Moscow described as a “much worse position.” The comments came a day after Kyiv confirmed it had suspended peace discussions aimed at ending the conflict that began in 2022.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Ukraine’s situation is “deteriorating day by day,” claiming that Kyiv will ultimately have no choice but to resume talks with Russia.

Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergiy Kyslytsya said in remarks published Wednesday that peace negotiations have been formally halted due to a lack of progress during earlier rounds held in Istanbul. “Since the peace talks ended this year without significant progress, they have been suspended,” he said, adding that Ukraine has urged its allies to help arrange a direct meeting between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow had presented “specific proposals,” including on prisoner exchanges, that remain unresolved. “I confirm, no one was going to have ‘creative discussions’ with them. Specific proposals were made, in particular on prisoner exchanges,” she said, accusing Kyiv of completing “less than 30%” of commitments linked to an agreed swap involving 1,200 people.

Zakharova added that Ukraine’s decision to suspend talks showed a “lack of desire for peace.”

The three negotiation rounds held in Istanbul this year primarily focused on prisoner and civilian exchanges, during which both sides submitted memorandums detailing their positions on ending the war.
