Zelenskyy Demands Stricter Sanctions on Moscow
In a virtual briefing late Wednesday, Zelenskyy told lawmakers that Kyiv "doesn't see that Russia wants to stop," underscoring his administration's assessment that Moscow remains committed to military expansion despite deteriorating troop morale.
The Ukrainian leader detailed October's combat toll, citing unprecedented personnel casualties inflicted by his forces since the 2022 full-scale invasion began. He also briefed senators on conditions near Pokrovsk, a strategic flashpoint in Ukraine's eastern defensive lines, where Russian forces continue concentrated assault operations.
Zelenskyy called for legislative action on multiple fronts: unlocking frozen Russian assets for Ukraine's use, implementing "secondary sanctions" against the energy sector, and providing long-range strike systems including Tomahawk missiles alongside enhanced air defense networks.
"On behalf of all Ukrainians, we are thankful for your bipartisan support … We are thankful to President (Donald) Trump for several initiatives that we will discuss today," he said.
Senator Lindsey Graham (Republican) and Senator Richard Blumenthal (Democrat) announced they are advancing separate measures targeting Moscow—including a bill to designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism contingent on the return of abducted Ukrainian children.
The call also highlighted advocacy by US First Lady Melania Trump on the abduction issue, with Zelenskyy noting that Ukrainian families had submitted a gratitude letter to her office.
The delegation included Senator Graham, alongside Democrats Jeanne Shaheen, Richard Blumenthal, Amy Klobuchar, Sheldon Whitehouse, Michael Bennet, Adam Schiff, and Richard Durbin. Lawmakers collectively reaffirmed bicameral and bipartisan commitment to sustained Ukrainian support while lauding the nation's demonstrated resilience.
