Musk Rolls Out New AI-Powered Online Encyclopedia
Musk revealed the project this month on his social media platform X, describing the AI-generated knowledge hub as “super important for civilization” and vital for “understanding the Universe.”
According to Musk, development began last month following a recommendation from his associate David Sacks, a tech investor and former Trump administration AI and crypto czar, who had advocated for a conservative counterpart to the nonprofit Wikipedia.
In contrast to Wikipedia’s volunteer-driven editorial process, Grokipedia’s content is overseen by Musk’s xAI chatbot, Grok. Users are limited to suggesting edits rather than directly contributing.
Although Musk promised Grok would cease sourcing content from Wikipedia “by the end of the year,” many current entries carry a disclaimer noting they are “adapted from Wikipedia, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 License.”
'Even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist'
Early comparisons have revealed significant gaps. Grokipedia’s article on President Donald Trump omits controversies highlighted on Wikipedia, while Musk’s personal page does not mention a hand gesture at a January rally that “many historians and politicians viewed as a Nazi salute.”
The Wikimedia Foundation confirmed it is reviewing the platform. “Wikipedia’s knowledge is—and always will be—human,” the organization said Monday, emphasizing that “AI companies rely on” Wikipedia’s collaborative approach. “Even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist.”
Launching with 885,000 entries in its version 0.1 release, Grokipedia enters a digital space long dominated by Wikipedia, which hosts 7.1 million English-language articles and remains one of the world’s most visited websites.
