Putin Holds Talks with Ethiopian PM in Moscow
The discussions saw key figures like Rosatom Chief Aleksey Likhachev and Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos formalize a roadmap for a nuclear power initiative in Ethiopia. The agreement was signed during the meeting, which was highlighted in a statement by the Kremlin.
Putin praised the growing partnership, stating, “Our relations are gaining momentum across all areas, and we are very pleased that things are going that way.”
Abiy, in turn, characterized the relationship between their nations as “very strong” and underscored the importance of leveraging this historical foundation for future progress. He added, “Enhancing this historical background to make better the future is very important.” The Ethiopian Prime Minister also expressed the country’s intent to align strategically with Russia, describing his Moscow visit as a crucial step in fortifying their bilateral ties.
Abiy’s office noted that the two leaders also covered a broad array of topics, including energy, agriculture, healthcare, defense, and the joint development of a nuclear power plant aimed at providing clean energy for public use.
The two had last met in October 2024 during the BRICS summit in Kazan, where they explored cooperation in areas like trade, health, and research.
Ethiopia, with a population exceeding 120 million, is keen to diversify its energy partnerships. Nearly half of its citizens remain without reliable access to electricity. In a bid to address this, Ethiopia has committed to large-scale renewable energy projects, including the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile. Officially inaugurated on September 9, the dam is expected to generate around 5.15 gigawatts of electricity.
