Multinational Naval Exercise Commences in Western Pacific
Scheduled to last nine days through August 12, the drill started Monday, involving naval forces from Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Spain, and Norway. The operation aims to support the vision of a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific."
The British Royal Navy’s HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier strike group is a key participant in the Indo-Pacific deployment, the MSDF confirmed in an official release.
The strike group operates alongside the US Navy’s nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington, a destroyer from the Royal Australian Navy, and frigates representing Spain and Norway.
The exercise will feature a range of naval operations, including antisubmarine warfare drills, Cross Deck operations, PHOTOEX exercises, among others.
This multinational drill coincides with a concurrent three-day joint maritime and aerial exercise conducted by the Russian and Chinese navies in the Pacific Ocean, which ran from Sunday through Tuesday.
Following the conclusion of the Joint Sea-2025 naval drills near Vladivostok, Russia, on Tuesday, Beijing and Moscow are set to begin a coordinated maritime patrol in the Western Pacific starting Wednesday, according to media.
