Macron Condemns Church Attack in Damascus

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron condemned Monday’s brutal assault on the Mar Ilyas Church in Damascus, standing firmly with Syrians battling terrorism.

Describing the incident as a “despicable attack,” Macron voiced his condolences to the families affected and the wounded. Posting on X, he said: “Despicable attack at the Saint Elijah Church in Damascus. I express our solidarity with the bereaved families and the injured.”

According to Syria’s Health Ministry, a suicide bomber affiliated with the ISIS (Daesh) terrorist group launched gunfire inside the eastern Damascus church on Sunday before detonating explosives. The attack claimed at least 20 lives and left 52 others injured.

Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to supporting the Syrian people, stating, “France supports the Syrian people in their fight against terrorism and for the return of peace.”

This tragedy follows closely on the heels of a May 26 announcement by Syria’s Interior Ministry, which revealed the dismantling of ISIS cells in the countryside around Damascus. During that operation, security forces confiscated a range of light and medium weaponry.

Since the collapse of the Assad government, Syrian security agencies have intensified their efforts to track down individuals accused of criminal offenses, human rights abuses, and terrorism-related actions.

After nearly 25 years in power, Syrian President Bashar Assad fled to Russia in December, marking the end of the Baath Party’s long-standing regime that began in 1963.
