Egypt’s Foreign Minister, U.S. Envoy Hold Talks on Israel-Iran Conflict

(MENAFN) On Saturday, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty spoke by phone with U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff, addressing the rapidly intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran, according to a release from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

During the discussion, Abdelatty voiced Egypt’s growing alarm over the spiraling hostilities, emphasizing that the situation represents “a serious threat to the security and stability of the region.”

“There are no military solutions to conflicts,” Abdelatty stated, reiterating Egypt’s consistent stance that “peaceful settlement and political dialogue remain the only option to ensure sustainable stability and peace in the Middle East region.”

The Egyptian diplomat stressed the importance of reviving negotiations between Washington and Tehran regarding Iran’s nuclear program, describing it as a pivotal measure to reduce tensions.

Witkoff, in turn, provided Abdelatty with insights into “the U.S. assessment of the developments and its ongoing efforts to give diplomacy a chance to contain the crisis,” according to the ministry’s statement.

Egypt has stepped up its diplomatic outreach in recent days, seeking to defuse the Israeli-Iranian confrontation. Abdelatty has been engaging with both regional and global stakeholders to encourage a peaceful resolution, amid heightened fears of potential U.S. military involvement against Iran.

The confrontation erupted on June 13 when Israel launched a wave of aerial and drone attacks on Iranian military and nuclear facilities. The strikes resulted in heavy losses, including among high-ranking military officials and nuclear scientists. Iran retaliated shortly afterward with a barrage of missiles and drones targeting Israeli territory.
