UN Secretary-General urges for ceasefire in Israel-Iran conflict

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an immediate de-escalation of the escalating military confrontation between Israel and Iran, urging both sides to move toward a ceasefire.

"I remain profoundly alarmed by the ongoing military escalation in the Middle East between Israel and Iran. I reiterate my call for immediate de-escalation leading to a ceasefire," said Guterres in a statement released on Wednesday.

He cautioned against the growing risk of the conflict expanding beyond the two countries. "I strongly appeal to all to avoid any further internationalization of the conflict. Any additional military interventions could have enormous consequences, not only for those involved but for the whole region and for international peace and security at large."

Guterres condemned the violence that has led to civilian casualties and destruction of vital infrastructure. He emphasized that continued military actions are causing "tragic and unnecessary loss of lives and injuries to civilians and damage to homes and critical civilian infrastructure."

He stressed that diplomatic engagement remains the most effective way to address regional tensions and concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear program. "The UN Charter remains our shared framework to save people from the scourge of war," he said. "I urge all (UN) member states to comply fully with the charter and international law, including international humanitarian law."

The current hostilities began after Israel launched a surprise offensive on Iran last Friday, targeting nuclear facilities. Iran responded swiftly with missile and drone strikes. The two nations have exchanged daily attacks since the confrontation began.
