Ukraine, Russia Report Fending Off Overnight Drone Attacks

(MENAFN) Ukraine and Russia each reported fending off major drone offensives overnight, with both sides claiming high interception counts in what is shaping up to be one of the most intense air skirmishes in recent months.

Ukraine’s Air Force announced on Telegram that Russia deployed 104 drones, including Shahed variants, in a widespread assault that began at 9 p.m. local time (1800 GMT) and continued into the early hours of Thursday. The attack targeted multiple fronts—north, east, south, and central regions of the country.

According to Ukrainian officials, 88 of the incoming drones were neutralized—40 through conventional firepower and 48 through electronic warfare measures. However, six sites were struck during the assault.

The Ukrainian military said the drone barrage was launched from a combination of Russian territory and occupied areas of Crimea, including Millerovo, Kursk, Orel, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, and Chauda.

At the same time, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported its air defenses had successfully intercepted 81 drones sent by Ukraine between 9:20 p.m. and 6:40 a.m. (1820–0340 GMT). The attack spanned 11 different regions, ranging from Bryansk to the outskirts of Moscow.

“Nineteen UAVs were shot down in Bryansk, 17 in Kursk, and 13 in Smolensk,” the ministry detailed.

Regional officials in Russia noted that no casualties or damage had been reported.

This overnight exchange marks one of the largest reciprocal drone assaults in recent memory, underscoring the escalating nature of aerial warfare between the two nations.
