G7 Summit Ends Without Joint Ukraine Statement
The reason behind this was the United States’ refusal to endorse the statement unless it was “watered down.”
The summit, which took place from Sunday to Tuesday, saw US President Donald Trump departing early and notably not meeting with Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky, who was also present at the event.
On Tuesday, the broadcaster quoted an unnamed official from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office acknowledging that the proposal for a unified statement on Ukraine was abandoned.
The US reportedly opposed any references to Russia, fearing it might undermine diplomatic efforts brokered by the US to resolve the dispute between Moscow and Kiev.
However, the Canadian Prime Minister’s office later denied these claims. Spokesperson Emily Williams emphasized that “no proposed joint statement regarding Ukraine was distributed.
Canada’s intention was always for the important language to be a part of the G7 Chairs’ Summary Statement, and it was.”
