S-Russian republic welcomes 3rd International Buddhist Forum

(MENAFN) The Republic of Kalmykia in southern Russia will host the 3rd International Buddhist Forum, a major global event focused on spiritual dialogue and cultural exchange. The forum will take place in Elista, the region’s capital, from September 25 to 28, and is expected to attract attendees from over 30 countries.

The gathering will serve as a key platform for examining the development and modern-day significance of Buddhism, a religion followed by roughly 500 million people worldwide. The event aims to renew global interest in Buddhist philosophy, traditions, and practices, while also exploring how these principles relate to the challenges of contemporary life.

Organizers emphasize that the forum will help promote international dialogue and encourage collaboration among global Buddhist communities, particularly in areas such as science, education, and culture.

In Russia, Buddhism is the third-largest religion after Christianity and Islam. It is especially prominent in Kalmykia, where about 70% of the population are Buddhists. The religion also has a strong presence in the Republic of Tyva (60%) and Buryatia (26%), as well as among active communities in cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg.

“Buddhism is a life philosophy that encourages people to better understand themselves and the world around them,” the forum’s organizers said. They added that the event will unite numerous countries where Buddhism plays a vital role in preserving spiritual values, cultural identity, and fostering peaceful international cooperation.

The previous two forums were held in Ulan-Ude, the capital of Buryatia. In 2023, the forum welcomed over 600 participants from 13 countries, including officials, academics, religious leaders, and NGO representatives. The most recent edition drew more than 1,800 participants from 15 countries and 22 Russian regions, with overall attendance exceeding 3,000.
