UN: Over Two Million Syrians Head Back Home Since December

(MENAFN) The United Nations refugee chief revealed on Thursday that since December, more than two million Syrians have made their way back to their homeland.

Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), shared on X that "Over two million Syrian refugees and displaced have returned home since December—a sign of hope amid rising regional tensions."

On his journey from Lebanon to Syria to mark World Refugee Day, Grandi emphasized the urgent need for a "political solution" to Syria’s ongoing crisis.

"This proves that we need political solutions—not another wave of instability and displacement," he stressed.

Following prolonged suffering and difficult conditions in refugee camps, thousands of Syrians have started to return as peace and stability gradually reestablish in the country after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Amid widespread destruction and worsening humanitarian challenges under Assad’s rule, millions fled Syria seeking refuge in neighboring countries.

Assad, who had led Syria for almost 25 years, left for Russia in December, signaling the end of the Baath Party’s control that had lasted since 1963.

In late January, Ahmad al-Sharaa, the former leader of anti-regime forces that helped remove Assad, was appointed president to oversee a transitional government.
