UK, Qatar Urge Calm Amid Middle East Tensions

(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, held a phone conversation on Wednesday to deliberate on the worsening circumstances in the Middle East.

Both leaders emphasized the significance of reducing tensions and pursuing diplomatic solutions.

According to a press release from the British Prime Minister's Office, Starmer reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s backing of Qatar as the two heads of state explored potential avenues to enhance peace and security in the region.

Tensions in the area have sharply risen since Friday, following Israeli aerial assaults targeting various locations within Iran, including key defense and atomic infrastructure. In retaliation, Tehran launched a series of counterattacks.

Israeli officials reported that no fewer than 24 individuals have died and several hundred sustained injuries due to the Iranian missile barrage.

At the same time, Iranian media stated that 585 people have perished and upwards of 1,300 have been hurt due to Israeli military actions.

"Turning to Gaza, the Prime Minister reiterated the intolerable situation on the ground and underlined the UK’s support for an immediate ceasefire," the Prime Minister's Office said.

Since October 2023, despite widespread global appeals for a cessation of hostilities, the Israeli military has continued its relentless campaign in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of more than 55,600 Palestinians, the majority being women and minors.

In a significant legal development last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest orders for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza.
