Putin Reveals Plan to Balance Iran’s Nuclear Aspirations, Israel’s Security

(MENAFN) During a Thursday meeting with top international news agency leaders in St. Petersburg, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that Russia is ready to back Iran’s peaceful nuclear development while simultaneously addressing Israel’s security worries.

Putin refrained from sharing detailed information but affirmed that Russia has conducted extensive talks on the matter with both Israeli and U.S. officials. He also revealed that Moscow has forwarded proposals to Iranian representatives.

He stated, "In general, it is possible to meet Iran's interests in peaceful nuclear energy and at the same time address Israel's concerns about its national security."

Highlighting Russia’s efforts to ease the ongoing nuclear tensions, Putin mentioned a "possible solution" has been put forward but emphasized that ultimate decisions lie with the political leaders of the involved nations.

Putin pointed to the strong trust between Moscow and Tehran as the foundation for fruitful collaboration in peaceful nuclear technology uses, including sectors like agriculture and healthcare.

He also revisited Russia’s historical role in Iran’s civilian nuclear projects, specifically the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant. While initially designed by German engineers, Russia’s state nuclear company, Rosatom, took over and completed the facility.

Putin explained, "It was a challenge, because we had to adapt the German design to Russian standards. But we succeeded, and the plant is operating successfully."

He confirmed contracts are in place to construct two more reactor units at Bushehr, with over 200 Russian experts currently on site. Additionally, Moscow has coordinated with Israeli officials to ensure safety measures are upheld during construction.

The backdrop to this dialogue is the heightened conflict between Israel and Iran that intensified on June 13, when Israel initiated Operation "Rising Lion" aimed at Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. Iran retaliated with counterstrikes, resulting in casualties reported by both sides amid continued hostilities.
