U.S. Restarts Student Visa Processing, Mandates Full Social Media Vetting

(MENAFN) The United States government revealed on Wednesday that it has recommenced handling student visa applications for foreign nationals, introducing a new stipulation that requires applicants to grant officials access to their social media accounts for thorough examination.

After halting student visa processing in May, the State Department has now lifted the freeze and distributed updated instructions to diplomatic missions worldwide. These directives mandate a comprehensive review of the "entire online presence" of individuals applying for student and exchange visas.

Applicants must make their social media profiles publicly accessible, as restricted access could be interpreted as an effort to hide information.

Consular officers are instructed to examine posts and messages that may reflect hostility toward the US, its government, cultural values, institutions, or foundational ideals.

This updated policy applies to both first-time applicants and those seeking to renew their student or exchange visas. Consular officials are required to investigate the applicant’s full digital footprint, which includes social media platforms, search engine results, online sources, and any accessible databases.

Last month, under the Trump administration, US embassies were ordered to suspend new student visa interviews while evaluating the implementation of mandatory social media screening for all international students.

This action follows a series of measures by the Trump administration aimed at discouraging international students from coming to the US. These include a rise in visa cancellations and targeted scrutiny of institutions like Harvard University.

Since January, the administration has faced backlash for efforts to deport students expressing peaceful dissenting opinions on US policies—such as criticism of Israel’s military actions and blockade against Palestine.

Critics argue these actions infringe upon the free speech protections enshrined in the US Constitution, which extend to all individuals within the country, regardless of citizenship status.
