Powerful Earthquake Rattles Japan’s Hokkaido
The tremor hit at 8:08 a.m. local time (11:08 p.m. GMT on Wednesday), occurring at a shallow depth in the waters southeast of the Nemuro Peninsula, the agency confirmed.
In contrast, the U.S. Geological Survey recorded the quake slightly lower, measuring it at 5.9 on the Richter scale.
Officials reported no casualties or structural damage following the incident. No tsunami warning has been issued.
The Japan Meteorological Agency noted that slight changes in sea level—less than 20 centimeters—could occur along eastern Hokkaido's Pacific coast, but emphasized there is no cause for concern regarding potential damage.
