Pentagon Confirms Readiness Amid Iran Tensions
His remarks come as attention grows over possible American military involvement in the region.
While speaking to senators, Hegseth emphasized that there is “only one person” empowered to make such decisions, noting that “the American people elected him to make these decisions on their behalf.”
He assured the Senate that the Department of Defense is ready to implement any such decisions when and if they are issued.
Testifying alongside Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Hegseth faced a series of inquiries during the Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, including ones related to military strike preparedness targeting Iran.
Senator Tom Cotton questioned whether it is the Pentagon’s responsibility to devise alternate strategies for potential presidential choices.
“It's your job to have contingency plans for everything that the president may or may not decide, is that correct?” he asked.
Hegseth confirmed, “That is correct,” and reaffirmed that “our job is to have contingency plans.”
When Senator Jeanne Shaheen asked whether the Secretary was contemplating any military measures that might lead the US into direct conflict, Hegseth refused to elaborate.
“Mr. Secretary, but my question for you is whether you have been asked actively to provide options for the president regarding a strike in the Middle East?” she asked.
Hegseth responded, “If I had or I had not, I wouldn't disclose that in this forum.”
He concluded by stating that his responsibility is to "make sure the president has options and is informed of what those options might be and what the ramifications of those options may be," underscoring the Pentagon's role in strategic planning and readiness.
