Former UK ambassador states no proof of nuclear threat from Iran

(MENAFN) Former UK Ambassador to Iran Richard Dalton has stated that there is no public evidence to suggest Iran poses a nuclear threat to Israel. This comment came shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed Iran was close to developing nuclear weapons, following Israel’s recent airstrikes on Iranian territory.

Speaking to Sky News, Dalton emphasized that available U.S. intelligence indicates no change in Iran’s stance on nuclear weapons, noting Tehran’s defense policy rejects weapons of mass destruction. He urged skepticism toward Netanyahu’s claims until concrete evidence is made public.

Israel launched its air campaign on Iran last Friday, alleging Tehran was nearing completion of a nuclear bomb. Iran denied the accusations and retaliated with missile and drone attacks on Israel.

According to a Washington-based Iranian human rights organization, the Israeli strikes have killed 585 people, including 239 civilians, and wounded over 1,300. Iranian missile responses reportedly caused 24 deaths and injured 804, with thousands evacuated amid ongoing tensions.

Iran signed the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with the U.S. and European nations to limit uranium enrichment in exchange for sanctions relief. However, after the U.S. withdrew unilaterally in 2018, Iran gradually stepped back from compliance and limited access for International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors.

Currently, Iran enriches uranium to 60% purity, far exceeding the 3.67% limit set by the now-defunct agreement.

Russia has condemned Israel’s airstrikes, urging de-escalation and warning that attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities risk triggering a “nuclear catastrophe.” The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Israel’s strikes violate international law and threaten global stability.
