Bombings in Colombia Take Lives

(MENAFN) At least two law enforcement officers and five civilians lost their lives in a series of 17 bomb and car bomb explosions that hit the Cauca and Valle del Cauca areas in southwestern Colombia on Tuesday, according to officials.

Additionally, 36 individuals sustained injuries, with 22 of them requiring treatment in various hospitals and medical centers.

Authorities reported that these assaults were executed by FARC dissidents loyal to Ivan Mordisco, marking the third anniversary of the death of Leider Johany Noscue, also known as "Mayimbu," a commander of the Western Coordinating Command who was killed in 2022.

The attacks were deliberately targeted at police personnel.

A sniper fatally shot Jair Gonzalo Gurrute, a 24-year-old patrolman from Caloto. Another officer died after assailants planted an explosive device at his checkpoint near the Villa Rica toll booth in Cauca.

Two civilians were killed in separate blasts near police stations in Cali, while another bombing resulted in the deaths of four individuals in the Jamundi municipality, according to officials.

The authorities attributed all these attacks to FARC dissidents.

Non-lethal attacks also took place in several Cauca municipalities, including Buenos Aires, Timbiqui, Corinto, and Patia.

Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez remarked that the recent attacks are a retaliation to military victories in the region.

He explained, “We are penetrating the core of Mordisco’s operations, both in the Micay Canyon and the Narino mountain range. Since they can’t confront security forces directly, they resort to terrorist acts to relieve the pressure,” he said in a statement to local media.
